There was a time in Texas history when man existed in harmony with his environment, telling time by
the position of the sun, breathing in the fresh air, eating what the earth provided, living—as they say
—between the ground and God. Those who visit Storybook Ranch in McKinney are offered the
chance to step back into this simpler time.
That experience gave local entrepreneur, Wayne Kirk, an idea. What if you could take troubled youth out of their turbulent environment and allow them to live, for a time, in partnership with the land? What if children who face daily challenges of handicap, illness or poverty could know what itʼs like to earn the love and devotion of a horse? What if senior citizens could take a break from a world that seems to race past them into a place thatʼs moving at their pace?
That dream became a reality when Wayne purchased Storybook Ranch with a twofold mission— preserving our Texas countryside and making a difference in the lives of underprivileged kids and our senior population.
Through Storybookʼs youth programs, underprivileged kids learn lessons of integrity and leadership with the land as their tutor and senior citizens are invited to commune with and receive healing from our past.
“Storybook Ranchʼs purpose is to promote healing through the gift of the horse, animal, nature, and ranch experience while recreating an historical setting for underprivileged kids, special needs children, and senior citizens—all free of charge,” Wayne said. “We want to offer them the chance to see beyond what may be everyday challenges and learn the lessons our past can teach.”
