Honoring Melanie Scobey

Melanie Scobey

Visiting the Website for Restoration Family Church of McKinney you’re hit with intriguing images—that of a crumbling family home collapsing into a heap alongside another, this one stable on a solid foundation. In front of the second a family is seated, holding hands, heads bowed in prayer.

For Melanie Scobey, this is more than captivating graphics. It depicts two seasons of her family’s life and epitomizes the ministry she and her husband, Derrick, pour their hearts and souls into every day at Restoration Family Church.

Looking for a way to make a dierence and touching lives has always come naturally to Melanie. Beginning in junior high, she volunteered her time at the Head Start Program where her mother served as director. But ten years ago, that natural bent toward helping others took a new direction, when her world was rocked by separation and divorce. She found herself a single mother of three with her husband married to another woman.

Far from the end of her family’s story though, Derrick and Melanie were eventually reunited, their family restored and a new ministry was born—Restoration Family Church of McKinney. As their mission statement explains Restoration Church exists to love, save, reconcile, grow and keep families together in Christ.

The message Pastor Derrick and Melanie extend to other families is, “We’ve been where you are. Our God is a God of second chances who longs to do for your family what He’s done for ours. It’s never too late. You can never do anything to stop God from loving you or to cause Him to give up on you and your family. Come let us show you how He longs to restore your family.”

The church the Scobeys envisioned has grown into a community of believers where anyone is welcome, regardless of who they are, where they’ve been, or what they’ve been through, where the message of hope and restoration is at the heart of everything they do.

In 2009 Melanie established P31 Women Building Women Ministry based on the Bible’s description of a virtuous wife in Proverbs 31. In addition to facilitating this dynamic weekly Bible study, she works as church secretary, teaches the youth of the church, volunteers at Grace Lake Horses and Healing Ministries, Hope’s Door Domestic Violence Counseling Center, VITAS Hospice of Dallas and counsels with couples and singles alongside her husband, not to mention keeping up with her duties as Mama to Zachary (19), Elijah (11) and Aliyah (9) and caring for her aging parents.

Melanie we’re not sure how you do all you do AND accomplish it with a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Thanks for making a dierence in our community.
