John Steinbeck wrote that a great teacher is a great artist whose medium is the human mind and spirit. Laurie Shackelford is one such artist. Teachers are, by nature, servants. The good ones spend their days shaping young minds. They great ones go above and beyond to leave a lasting impression on those minds. That’s exactly what Mrs. Shackelford does each day. One way she does this is by rewarding good behavior in her students with a Caught Being Nice card. Any of her second graders seen being of service to another is eligible to be “caught”. When they are, Mrs. Shackleford reinforces their selfless behavior. William Butler Yeats wrote, "Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire." Thank you Mrs. Shackelford for lighting that fire, for training up our children “in the way they should go” and for teaching them to have that servant's heart you so naturally exemplify.
