Honoring Laurie Michie

Laurie Michie

Laurie Michie is the real deal. The only thing bigger than her heart is her vision to help youngsters grow in character and wisdom. Laurie is a teacher who seems to do it all and think of everyone but herself.

As a mother of three and elementary school teacher, Laurie has plenty on her plate without taking on additional responsibilities. Yet she’s team leader for her fellow second grade teachers at McClure Elementary where she serves as Science Coordinator, Emergency Medical Trainer, mentor to new teachers entering the school district and has rewritten/revised the districts Science curriculum.

Laurie’s commitment to her students and their families goes beyond that of most in her profession. Parents find her eager to help set goals for their children, to partner with them to develop workable strategies for their child’s success—not just academically, but socially, emotionally and physically.

“I believe in a welcoming environment for parents, so they can feel free to walk in and talk to me about any concerns,” Laurie said. “Education is a lifelong process. Students need a warm, caring environment to help foster learning. With the support of parents and teachers, they’ll be able to be successful in life.”

As if all this weren’t enough, Laurie is working alongside her husband, Mike, to establish a new Episcopal Christian church in McKinney, teaching Sunday school, conducting other children’s ministry services, counseling families and couples, conducting Alpha Courses on the basic tenants of Christianity and teaching Dave Ramsey courses on debt - free living.

The most remarkable thing about Laurie is her love for children.  She goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Children are our most valuable resource and our best hope for the future. That is why, for February, FamilyWise honors Laurie Michie.
