Honoring Alan Shebaro

Alan Shebaro

General George Patton said, “Always do more than is required of you”. Our FamilyWise volunteer of the month, Alan Shebaro, lives out that philosophy every day. It has carried him to victory on the battlefield, in the martial arts arena, in business and in life. An ex-Special Forces soldier, award-winning martial artist and owner of Tier I Training Facility in McKinney, Alan is a man who gives tirelessly of himself, his time and his expertise to help others, be they his fellow soldier, his friends and neighbors or complete strangers.

One way he does this is through free Community Workouts. Consider that, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 36% of Americans donʼt participate in any physical leisure activity, 60 million of us are obese and 41 million are pre-diabetic. Alan hears stats like that, figures somebody has to do something. Then he does.

He establishes free Community Workouts every other Saturday where he seeks to make exercise fun, to make fitness accessible and to show families how they can enjoy working out together. His goal is to meet parents and kids where they are, offering them a workout thatʼs doable, that can become a comfortable part of their lifestyle. Offering them free means theyʼre accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford to join a gym. Alanʼs idea is to build esprit de corps in his community as well and help others become physically fit.

On alternate Saturdays, he offers self-defense classes, also free of charge, showing women—and others—reliable tactics and strategies for protecting and defending themselves. He also serves as a role model to young martial art students through his Tier 1 Little Rangers class and is involved in Task Force Dagger, a program which ministers to severely wounded Special Forces soldiers and their families.

Similarly to his Community Workout program, his work with Task Force Dagger helps families see that, just because their loved one has become disabled doesnʼt mean there arenʼt physical activities they can enjoy together —diving for instance. The program works to show families they can be healthy and fit while enjoying time together, even after a disabling injury.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Sun Tzu said, “A leader leads by example, not by force”. FamilyWise salutes Alan Shebaro, a man who lives out these two principles day to day to the benefit of his community, his country and his world.
